Ashleigh Walker is in love. You know the feeling - that intense, heart-racing, all-consuming emotion that can only come with first love. It’s enough to stop her worrying about bad grades at college. Enough to distract her from her parents’ marriage troubles. There’s just one thing bothering her… Shouldn’t it be her boyfriend, Dylan, who makes her feel this way - not Miss Murray, her English teacher?
This Young Adult, LGBT coming-of-age story tackles a number of issues that modern youth have to deal with, namely parental divorce, relationships and, most poignantly, coming out. I wish that I could have read this book when I was younger, because Ash, the protagonist, reminded me so much of my younger self.
At first, I found the book to be slightly juvenile, possibly because I haven’t read any YA fiction for a while. Initially, its style reminded me a lot of Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging, which I was obsessed with when I was younger, and this obviously did not appeal to me as much now, as it did then. However, after sticking with it, I really found myself becoming engrossed by the story. It is not only funny but it deals sensitively with adult themes, which I found refreshing.
I found myself laughing at the fact that I used to (and perhaps, to some degree, still do) think in exactly the same way as Ash, as the book vividly portrays young people today, and perhaps this is a part of the reason that I found most of the characters to be so relatable.
I particularly enjoyed the fact that this book exhibits a wide variety of responses to Ash’s coming out, as I am sure that anybody who has dealt with a similar situation will identify with at least one, if not all, of the reactions from her friends and family.
Naturally, I would recommend this book to anybody who loves YA fiction, but especially to those between the ages of 15 and 18. I am also sure that most LGBT people will be able to relate to Ash’s experience in one way or another, and I believe this book could serve as a useful introduction to the struggles – and triumphs – of LGBT youths, for both them and their family and friends!
